Similarities Between Italian and English

When you start learning Italian, you’ll undoubtedly notice that it has many aspects that sound a lot like English.

That’s because they both have a lot in common with the other Romance languages. Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese and some other European languages fall into this category.

And while English is usually grouped within the Germanic family of languages (along with German and Dutch), the island of Great Britain shares a long history with French conquerors. This has made English an extremely diverse and complex language that incorporates many common elements from French and its other neighbors.

Since all the Romance languages grew from the same single language, there are still many obvious vocabulary and grammatical similarities—even after almost 2000 years!

Learning Italian in Italy

Italian is considered one of the easiest languages for a native English speaker to learn. The grammar and sentence structure are different from English, but simpler. Because both languages have Latin roots, they also share thousands of cognates – words that sound the same and have the same meanings. Some examples would be

  • Broccoli
  • Cappucchino
  • Lasagne
  • Latte
  • Martini
  • Al Dente
  • Pizza
  • Ravioli

And many many more!

One of the Veneto’s most popular holiday destinations is Lido di Jesolo. This purpose built beach resort has miles of sandy beaches and plenty of evening entertainment. It is sometimes known as the ‘Venetian Riviera.’  There are shops, restaurants bars and cafes. You can hire bicycles or just soak up the sun. These are all activities where you could try out your Italian words and phrases if you take the time to learn a little of the local language!
