Trip to Treporti, Murano, Burano, and Venice: what to see?

During the boat trip, you’ll be able to admire some magnificent scenery. Once ashore, the islands reveal their charm through a mix of colourful houses, narrow streets, bridges, churches, bell towers, crafts and local traditions.

Burano

Burano is the most picturesque island in the Venetian Lagoon, and a visit here never fails to bring a smile to your face. Its brightly colored houses are known worldwide. Legend has it that fishermen painted their houses in vibrant colors to spot them when returning from sea on foggy days, called “caìgo.” Although this story isn’t verified, there’s no other place as colorful and lively.

Burano is also renowned for its lace, which is becoming increasingly rare due to the time-consuming production process. The lace is crafted using the “tombolo” technique, allowing for extremely delicate and intricate patterns. According to legend, a man once resisted the advances of a mermaid. To reward his strength of character, she gave him a crown made of sea foam. This gift is said to have inspired the women of Burano to create their famous lacework.

The meticulous process made Burano lace very valuable. Today, the production costs are almost unsustainable for businesses. However, you can still see elderly women working on lace in some of the island’s shops. Watching their precision and dexterity is fascinating.

From the island of Burano, you can spot a small island with a bell tower and an ancient basilica. This is Torcello, the island that holds the roots of Venice.

Murano

For centuries, Murano has been the capital of the glass art world. As the center of artistic glassmaking, its techniques have been passed down from generation to generation, evolving into a worldwide standard of excellence. The Serenissima decided to move the glass furnaces from Venice’s historic center to Murano for safety reasons. Another key factor in this decision was the economic consideration of not spreading the secrets of the precious glass. During your free time on the island, you can enter a Murano glass factory and watch the glassblowing masters at work. You can also enjoy a pleasant stroll to the large blue glass sculpture in front of the Murano Cathedral and visit the charming Lampadaires Amoureux.

Free time in Venice

Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world! You will have around two and a half hours of free time with plenty of activities to choose from. Whether you visit its most iconic landmarks or discover its hidden squares, there’s something for everyone. Among the options, you can choose a romantic gondola ride, enjoy the breathtaking views from St. Mark’s Square towards the lagoon and San Giorgio Island, take a scenic walk to the Rialto Bridge, or explore the city’s unique architecture.

Torcello

Temporarily, this island is not included in our visit due to logistical issues.

In Torcello, you can relive the atmosphere of Venice’s origins. Torcello was, in fact, the first of the lagoon islands to be inhabited. Over time, it became the center of commercial exchanges in the northern Adriatic, before Venice’s rise. Once home to thousands of residents, the island now has only 12 inhabitants, and no trace of the old settlements has survived. What remains is a precious monumental complex comprising the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the oldest in the Venetian lagoon. Next to it is the Church of Santa Fosca, and a few steps away, the legendary Throne of Attila. The Devil’s Bridge, the subject of a curious legend, is also characteristic of the island.
