The first glasses in a fresco in Treviso

The Church of San Nicolò, an architectural jewel in the center of Treviso, holds a fresco in its Chapter House that has captured the attention of historians.

It is an extraordinary cycle of frescoes entitled “Illustrious Personalities in the Dominican Order” painted by Tommaso da Modena and dating back to 1352. The author depicts Cardinal Hugh of Provence wearing glasses, as he was engaged in the activity of amanuensis.

The first glasses depicted in the history of painting.

The radicchio of Treviso

Radicchio di Treviso is a jewel of Veneto gastronomy.

Its origin dates back centuries and is deeply linked to the Treviso area. Every year, in the fall and winter months, the fields fill with these beautiful plants ready to be harvested.

Given the time of year when it is born, and its white and pink streaks, it is also called the “winter flower.”

Over the years, radicchio has won not only the hearts of Trevisans, but also those of international gourmets. It has become a symbol of Italian culinary excellence, prized for its versatility in cooking.

Not surprisingly, it is one of the main ingredients during local festivals dedicated to its culinary cult!

The "Processo aea vecia sul Sile"

One of the most folkloric events in Treviso is the so-called “Processo aea Vecia sul Sile,” literally: the trial of the old woman on the Sile river.

In mid-Lent, between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, near Ponte Dante this event has been held since the early 1800s.

The program of the trial of the vecia involves lighting a bonfire, on which a puppet in the likeness of an old woman is placed.

This event has very ancient roots, closely related to those of the Panevin, both Venetian traditions.

It is one of the most heartfelt folkloric events in the capital, a tradition between the sacred and the profane.
