Why Take a Dolomites Day Trip from Venice?

Yes, you can explore the Dolomites and return to Venice in one day. Choosing a 12-hour itinerary gives you something especially valuable: enough time to travel farther into the mountain range and reach Lake Braies while still discovering some of the iconic lakes and towns around Cortina.

This is not a hiking tour. Instead, your Dolomites day tour combines scenic driving with three longer stops for walks and several shorter stops for photographs and views. It is an excellent choice if you want your day trip to the Dolomites to include different landscapes without organizing transportation, parking, routes, and timing yourself.

Venice to Dolomites Day Trip: your 12 Hour Itinerary

The itinerary is designed around three things: time to look, time to walk, and time to enjoy the journey.
Times are approximate, and because this is a private experience, the schedule can be adapted when possible to your interests.

01

From Venice at 8:00 AM to Pieve di Cadore at 9:30 AM

Your adventure starts around 8:00 AM at Piazzale Roma, where you meet your driver and leave Venice behind. After the highway section (about 1 hour), your tour guide joins you near Pieve di Cadore, the birthplace of Titian, one of the great painters of the Italian Renaissance. There is time for a short coffee break around Pieve or the picturesque Lake Lagole before heading deeper into the mountains.

Departure for Lake Braies at 10 a.m.

We set off again with the guide toward Lake Braies at 10 am. Now the scenery begins to change quickly. The road leads toward peaks, forests, and alpine lakes, and you know the real journey has begun. Along the way, there will be a (longer) photo stop at Lago di Auronzo, and another, shorter one at Lake Misurina (where we’ll stop on the way back).

Depending on timing, conditions, and your interests, other short panoramic stops can be added along the way. These pauses are part of the experience. On a private tour, an unexpected view doesn’t always have to be something you watch disappear through the window.

Arrival at 12:00 p.m. at Lake Braies: Time to Walk Along the Shore

Around noon, you reach Lake Braies, one of the most recognizable alpine lakes in the Dolomites. You have approximately two hours for the lake and lunch, giving you time to walk, admire the mountains rising around the water, and find your own favorite viewpoint. Picture yourself leaving the car behind and approaching the shoreline. The lake opens in front of you, and the surrounding peaks create a natural amphitheater. If you prefer not to walk, a boat ride on the lake can be considered as an alternative, with an additional charge and subject to availability.

Lake Misurina and Tre Cime di Lavaredo

After lunch, around 2:00 p.m., the trip continues toward Lake Misurina, which we reach after about 50 minutes. Here, we stop along the shore to take some enchanting panoramic photos. This is one of the classic landscapes of the eastern Dolomites. Water, forest, and mountains meet in a setting that changes constantly with the weather and light.

But there’s another view, just as spectacular and less well-known, waiting for you nearby.

Lake Antorno and the Tre Cime View

A short drive takes you to Lake Antorno, smaller and quieter than Misurina. Here you can enjoy a walk along the water (about 30 minutes). The calm surface reflects the surrounding forest and peaks, while the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo rise on the horizon. It is the kind of place where a planned walk can easily become a few extra minutes of simply standing still and looking.

Cortina d’Ampezzo: meet the Queen of the Dolimites

At about 4:30 p.m., depart for Cortina d’Ampezzo via Passo Tre Croci (about 30 minutes). In Cortina you’ll have time to walk along the town’s main street and, if you wish, stop for an aperitivo before leaving the mountains. From Cortina, the panorama includes the Cinque Torri and the Tofane. Cortina has an important Olympic history: it hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 and was once again at the heart of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games.

Return to Venice at 8 PM

Around 6:00 PM, it is time to start the journey back from Cortina d’Ampezzo. After saying goodbye to your guide near Lagole, you continue toward Venice with your driver, arriving at Piazzale Roma at approximately 8:00 PM.

In one day, you have traveled from the lagoon to some of Italy’s best-known mountain landscapes, with enough time to get out of the car and experience them rather than simply pass through.

The times are approximate and may vary depending on traffic, road conditions, and other circumstances throughout the day.

Why This Venice to Dolomites Day Trip Gives You More Time to Explore

The main advantage of this Venice to Dolomites day trip is not simply that it lasts 12 hours. It is what those additional hours allow you to do. You can reach Lake Braies while still including Lake Misurina, Lake Antorno and Cortina. You also have three longer stops, plus shorter opportunities for panoramic photographs.

Around six hours of the day are spent in the vehicle, but only approximately two are on the highway. The remaining driving takes place within the scenic itinerary itself, along roads surrounded by the Dolomites Mountains.

With a maximum of six guests, the experience remains genuinely private. The route and duration of individual stops can also be adjusted on request, while respecting the overall 12-hour duration.

Book your Dolomites trip from Venice

Make the Dolomites part of your Venice trip: a full day changes what is possible. You can leave Venice in the morning, walk beside Lake Braies, see the Tre Cime di Lavaredo on the horizon, explore Lake Antorno and discover Cortina d’Ampezzo before returning to the lagoon that evening.
