Trip Treporti Burano Murano and Torcello: what to see?
It has been the capital of glassmaking for centuries. The fulcrum of the art glass industry, here techniques have been handed down between generations until they constitute world excellence. La Serenissima wanted to move the glass furnaces from the historic center of Venice to Murano for security reasons. However, the economic reason of not spreading the secrets of precious glass was equally crucial in the choice. During the stop you can enter a Murano glass furnace and see the master glassmakers at work. On the island you can enjoy a pleasant walk among the various points of interest. Remember the grandiose blue glass sculpture in front of Murano Cathedral and the delightful Lampioni Innamorati.
It is the most picturesque island in the lagoon and visiting it always puts a smile on your face. Its colorful houses are known worldwide and delight photographers, as any photo gallery on Burano shows. Legend has it that the fishermen of Burano colored the houses to recognize them when they returned from the sea on caìgo, that is, foggy days. This is not at all proven, the fact remains that it is not known why, there is no other place in the world so colorful and lively.
Burano is also known in the world for its lace, which is increasingly rare because of the very long processing times. In Burano, in fact, lace is worked by bobbin lace, which makes it possible to create lace of sublime grace and with truly complex designs. Legend has it that a man had resisted the advances of a mermaid and this one to reward him (we had understood that love is more powerful than magic thanks to him) would give him a crown made from the foam of the waves. From this gift the women of Burano would be inspired for their famous lace.
Even then, however, the laborious technique made Burano lace a king’s commodity. Today the costs of production would be unaffordable for any business. It remains possible to see elderly lacemakers at work in some of the island’s stores: watching the precision and care of bobbin lace-making will enchant you.
Arriving in Torcello you can relive the atmosphere of Venice’s origins. Torcello was in fact the first of the lagoon islands to be inhabited. And indeed over time it became the center of trade in the upper Adriatic, before the rise of Venice. While in the past Torcello had thousands of inhabitants, nowadays it has only 12, and no trace remains of the ancient settlements. A valuable monumental complex of the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the oldest in the lagoon, remains. Next to it is the Church of Santa Fosca, and, a few steps away, the legendary Throne of Attila. Also characteristic is the Devil’s Bridge, the subject of a curious legend.
