Venice tourist tax: the answers to your questions

Venice tourist tax, venice entry fee… whatever name you give it, you need to know what is important to remember.

The beginning of 2024 brought a new regulation for tourist access to Venice. The Municipality introduced a tax to discourage daily tourism and mitigate the effects of mass tourism. Now, payment of a tax is required for visitors wishing to spend only a day in the city and visiting the city.

Important to note that, except for residents of Venice, all visitors must register. Some registrations are free, while others incur an additional cost.

When do you have to pay ?

Currently, this is an experimental phase regarding the implementation of the entry fee in Venice. This measure is not yet officially in effect but is in the experimental phase. Below are the 60 days starting from April 3rd on which this regulation will be active. Note that this fee will only be valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Who has to pay this fee ?

Daily and occasional tourists who wish to access the historic city of Venice and are not exempted will be subject to paying the contribution. Note that this regulation applies only to the historic center, while smaller islands are not affected.

Who is exempt?

Some individuals are exempt from payment, including those born in the Municipality of Venice and residents of the Municipality of Venice who only need to present their identity document.

We note some examples of other exempt persons who must nevertheless register and request a document on the municipal government portal. You can consult a more complete version on this.

For example:

  • Residents in the Metropolitan City of Venice.
  • Residents in the Veneto region.
  • People who have booked their stay in accommodation facilities in the municipality of Venice and who are subject to the tourist tax. The exemption is recognized from the day of arrival to the day of departure. On the portal, you can find the complete list of the facilities concerned.
  • Teachers and students of schools and universities on school trips.
  • Children under the age of 14.
  • People with a certified disability and those accompanying them.

Venice entry fee: how much is it ?

5€ per person, for those paying by the fourth day preceding the day of access in Venice
10€ per person, for those paying after the fourth day preceding the day of access in Venice

After payment, a personal QR code will be assigned to you, which must be presented in case of inspection.


Where to register/pay ?

Please proceed to the designated portal, where you will be able to perform all operations online. It is recommended to have your identity documents and any other necessary supporting documents with you.

To pay the fee, simply indicate the date of the visit and specify the number of individuals involved along with their specific details. Please note that only individuals over the age of 14 are subject to this fee, but they must still be mentioned in the registration.

Regarding exemption status, it is necessary to specify your specific case, select the dates, and then provide all required personal information, possibly accompanied by supporting documents


Venice tourist tax: is there a fine in case of non-compliance ?

In case the person subject to inspection is unable to present proof of payment of the fee or the document attesting to the exemption, an administrative penalty ranging from 25 to 150 euros is provided, regardless of the amount of the fee. Additionally, legal actions may be initiated in case of providing false information.
