What to see in Murano and Burano?
The island of Murano is known worldwide for the art of blown glass. Since the XIII, Murano has been the centre of the Venetian glass industry, with its unique techniques being handed down from generation to generation. The morning tour includes also a demonstration of Murano glass and the creation of beautiful objects by master glassmakers.
Burano is considered the most picturesque place in the lagoon because its brightly coloured houses. According to the local legend, the fishermen of Burano used to paint their houses in bright colours so that they could recognize them on their return from the sea in the days of thick fog.
The Venetians do not confirm this legend, however Burano has surely become a unique place in the world, with both professional and amatour photographers indulging in taking thousand pictures when visiting the island, as it can be seen from the many Burano photo galleries. Burano is also known for the production of rare artisan lace. In fact, with a difficult technique, the lace is worked on a pillow. This technique allows the creation of the finest laces with the most complex designs. Historically only the kings and queens of Europe could afford this precious lace. Nowadays, the scarcity of lace is due more to the limited number of lacemakers. Visit to the Lace Museum, next to the church of Saint Martin to retrace the history of this unique art in the world.

Boat trip to Murano and Burano islands: is it better to go on a tour or to use your ACTV passes?
With an ACTV pass it is possible to have unlimited travel to the islands of the Venice lagoon for 24, 48, 72 hours or more (depending on the pass purchased). ACTV passes can be a good option to visit the islands independently, especially if a person wants to take it slowly, allowing time to visit museums and artistic sites (which is surely a nice thing to do).
On the other hand, ACTV passes can be a risky option during busy periods. In fact, during the summer months or during the weekends all year round, the queues at ACTV landing stages are quite long and the boats are crowded. One might get stuck on an island waiting hours for a boat and wasting precious time that could have been dedicated to some other activity. This would not be the case with an organized tour.
Hence, for the same price of a 24 hour ACTV pass (20 Euro), to visit Murano and Burano it may be a good idea to opt for an organized tour, especially if you are in a group!
