Burano Murano Torcello Tour: The Must-Visit Islands of the Lagoon
What are the peculiarities of the islands in the Venice Lagoon? Each has its own charm and history. Let us introduce them to you:
Murano Island
It is globally renowned for its glass production known as “Murano Glass.” Glassmaking was moved from Venice to Murano as early as the 13th century to mitigate fire hazards in the city. Murano glass is famous for its exceptional quality, coloring, and manufacturing techniques.
Don’t miss the chance to visit Murano to explore the craftsmanship and observe glassblowers in action. During our excursion, you’ll witness them live and understand why this art form is so celebrated.
After the glass furnace, we recommend heading to the island’s center to visit the beautiful Basilica of Saints Mary and Donato. Also, don’t miss the romantic “Lampioni innamorati,” the meeting point for lovers on the island.
Burano island
Famous for its colorful houses and exceptional lace production, Burano is a destination that will delight amateur photographers.
Lace, once a luxury product, is scarcely produced today due to its exorbitant cost. However, you can still find talented lacemakers in certain shops on the island. We also recommend delving into the history of Burano lace through a visit to the Lace Museum and exploring the Church of San Martino, where the relics of Saint Barbara are preserved.
Torcello Island
Torcello was one of the first islands in the lagoon to be inhabited. At the peak of its history, it was a significant commercial center with approximately 10,000 inhabitants. Today, only 12 people live on this small island. It’s the perfect place for those seeking to escape the crowds and enjoy nature.
As the sole witnesses to its past grandeur, you’ll find:
- The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the 12th century, with its splendid Byzantine mosaics.
- The Church of Santa Fosca.
- The legendary Throne of Attila.
- The Devil’s Bridge, with its distinctive structure lacking parapets.
