While you are in venice, Join us in the workshop of a real glass atelier in Murano and meet Muriel, who creates works of art in her beautiful glasswork studio. Muriel will begin by demonstrating the extraordinary alchemy of how she creates the Venetian pearls.
Creating the colour in the murano glass beads?
Murrine are coloured patterns or images made in a glass cane that are revealed when the cane is cut into cross sections. Murrine can be made into infinite designs to enhance the beauty of the glass. One familiar style is the flower or star shape which, when used together in large numbers from a number of different canes is called millefiori.
Murrine production first appeared in the Middle East more than 4,000 years ago and was revived by Venetian glassmakers on Murano in the early 16th century.
Make your own Murano glass beads!

Longer murano glass bead courses.
Courses with candlelight pearls of 1, 2, 3 hours … or a week!
The course is suitable for everyone, including children from 10 years (remembering that a parent must always be present during the activity). The one and a half hour course is enough to create at least one pearl, while the three hour course allows you to create the Murano glass elements for a set (eg pendant and earrings). If you really want to learn more about creating these beautiful piece s then you can opt for a longer course over several days, to learn the complexities of the technique and to create more complex decorative elements. The courses are available all year round by appointment, from Monday to Saturday morning, except on public holidays. Don’t forget that at the end of the course the glass is put to temper in an oven for about 24 hours, after which the elements will be perforated for use. The pearls will then be delivered after 48 hours; delivery can be done by hand if you are still in Venice, or by post (for international items, a surcharge may be requested).
Where is the course held?
Muriel’s atelier is a 5-minute walk from the ACTV stop “Murano Museo”, which can be reached directly from the Santa Lucia train station by line n. 3, or with Fondamenta Nuove with line 4.2. You can check the timetables on the ACTV transport company website (http://actv.avmspa.it/it/content/orari-servizio-di-navigazione-0)
When you meet the artisans of Murano glass you will enter another world. Enjoy the island by making contact with those who live and create in this unique city suspended between water and sky. You will understand how the art of glass is part of the culture of venice, which has developed here for at least 1000 years. You will also be able to fully appreciate the works of art in the Glass Museum with the extra knowledge you will have gained..
If you are fond of jewels, pearls and murrine, you can do other courses with Muriel like the Murano glass jewellery creation course! Discover all the details on the Murano Venezia Jewels page!
If, on the other hand, you are interested in seeing how large vases, chandeliers and glass sculptures are produced, then we recommend a visit to a glass furnace, where you can see the explanation of glass blowing techniques and discover the history of a trade that has been handed down for generations.
