Have you ever wondered what the Venetians do in their own leisure time?
Among their favorite outdoor activities, whether it’s a rowing boat or a motorboat, is always a boat ride in the Venice lagoon! But not a gondola – this kind of sailing is more how most Venetians travel on the water.
Let yourself be guided by a professional skipper and discover the most interesting parts of the lagoon and even join them for a refreshing swim away from the crowds!

Sailing to the third in Venice: a historic tradition

The triangular ‘terza’ sail was invented in Venice between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as an evolution of the previous square Latin sails. This triangular lug sail is much more manoeuvrable and suitable for flat bottom hulls (just like those needed for navigation in the lagoon!). It is called sail to the third because the cross bar of the sail is inserted into  the mast at a third of its height.
Even today the sails traditionally maintain bright colors as they did in the past. These bright colours were in fact useful for identifying the boats in fog and at night.
These features, still used by modern sailing boats, symbolise the character of the venice  lagoon. Visit places where Venetians meet at weekends, maybe have a swim, enjoy nature and see species of birds that have lived here since ancient times.
