Venice Painting Outdoor Workshop: open air in Venice!

The beautiful city of Venice makes an incredible subject for any artist. The Italian landscape, the architecture, the colours of the Canals and the gondolas of the city are all truly unique subjects to represent. 

To be able to paint these subjects while actually being outdoors looking at them directly, as well as being guided by a professional art tutor is a real treat for any budding painter.

Vivovenetia offers the amazing opportunity of actually having a private painting lesson for those who want to improve their skills, or learn from scratch the techniques of watercolour and of oil painting on canvas.  

The lesson will take place either in the studio or outdoors, and you will have a teacher with you to guide you at the same time. We recommend a minimum of 2 hours for outdoor watercolour painting. To develop your skills even further, we could arrange multiple lessons for you over few days. These lessons are for all levels from beginner to advanced.

Venice painting -where to start?

Our tutors are dedicated to teaching students the secrets of vintagepainting in Venice, using a unique method that they have developed. These workshops explore the various stages of how to create  watercolor painting outdoors.

The first step is the sketch, which remains essential in order to create the outline and dimensions of a well-planned painting. Then colours are carefully added, chosen to create the desired effect.

You will learn how to create subtle colour variations which typify the landscape of Venice Italy. Next you will learn how to understand shading and contouring and how to represent light in your Venice  painting, a very important element for Venice especially with all the water around in the Venice canals!

The teacher will start by drawing or painting in front of the students, to show how to do it in practice. Everything is explained in detail so you will understand both the concept and the execution of the painting technique.

Watercolours in Venice open air

We explain how to build up colour in layers, how to deal with graded colour wash, how to soften edges and overlap strokes with your brush. Again capturing the light within the painting, is an essential technique. For drawing we suggest charcoal pencils to create good shading effects. You will also learn the basic principles of perspective so that your images will look as realistic as possible.

Roberto will be happy to welcome you and teach you the “en plein air” technique in the beautiful city of Venice. He will take you to quiet places, off the beaten track, in Cannaregio area.

The painting course is suitable for everyone, from beginners to the most experienced.

Painting Venice, is an unforgettable experience for an artist. Not only will you be taught the academic principles of drawing and painting but you will be given the ability to create and eventually complete your own original watercolour painting. T

These classes take place in the sestiere of Cannaregio. The teacher knows where to go to find typical views of the city but where you will not be disturbed. They will show you the variety of views on offer from the spectacular open views across the canal and the city to the urban landscape of the more working class neighbourhoods. All locations are accessible by foot.
