To answer this question we will take you to a splendid Venetian atelier of historical fancy dress costumes and handmade masquerade masks.

Just a few minutes away from Piazza San Marco, the atmosphere in the workshop of the atelier gives us the feel of the Venice of past centuries, including costumes, masks and accessories. This atelier is one of the few that still works according to age old tradition. You will therefore be able to appreciate the value of this artisanal craft, used for centuries to make authentic Venetian masks. The artisans will accompany us on a journey of discovery of the craftsmanship of vintage eye masks and costumes. We will explore the historical roots of the Carnival, the fashion of the past centuries in Venice, and the precise work of the craftsmen, as they combine creativity, historical research and excellent technical skills.

Visiting the Venetian costume Atelier.

During the visit we will discover the history and practical techniques of the creation of Venetian costumes, all made by hand. These outfits pay homage every year to the festive Carnival ritual parading in the city’s streets. The lucky ones who take part in the masquerade balls during the Venetian Carnival period can rent a costume for a day and truly immerse themselves in the festivities.

You will learn about the origins of the Carnival, it’s rituals and stories, from the unique point of view of the creators of these enchanting pieces.

We will then move on to the Venetian mask to discover its history and production techniques used. With the artisans always at work in the atelier, it will be easy to see a practical demonstration of the making of a beautiful traditional mask.
