Festival of the Redeemer:
what is it?
What is celebrated on the Redentore Day? For those who don’t know what the Feast of the Redeemer is, here’s a brief overview. To end the terrible plague pandemic of the 16th century, the Senate decided to ask for divine help by building a church on the island of Giudecca: the Church of the Redeemer (built by Andrea Palladio). On July 20, 1577, the end of the pandemic was celebrated, thanking Christ the Redeemer with a procession that reached the church via a bridge of boats.
Even today, to cross the Giudecca Canal and reach the Church of the Redeemer, a votive bridge of boats is created only during these days. The Feast of the Redeemer has been commemorated and celebrated every year for almost five centuries! The Venetians go out strictly by boat, in typical Venetian boats like the sampierota and the sandolo.
